The Board of Fire Commission (BOFC) has jurisdiction with regard to the hiring, firing, disciplining, or promotion of personnel in the Fire Department. This includes appointing the Fire Chief; approving appointments made by the Fire Chief; hearing appeals on disciplinary actions taken by the Fire Chief against subordinates; and establishing physical, educational, and experience qualifications for all candidates for the Department. 

Members

The Board of Fire Commissioners consist of five Sussex Citizens and one Village Trustee (non-voting). Citizen members serve five-year staggered terms. Members of the Board of Fire Commission must be residents of the Village of Sussex and may not be an active member of the Sussex Fire Department. Those with a background in human resources and/or emergency services are strongly encouraged to apply.

Meetings

Meetings are held every two months or as needed at the Civic Center (N64W23760 Main Street).

Statutory Authority

The BOFC was founded in 1965 and its powers come from Wis. Stats. 61.65 and the Village Board under
sections 1.14 and 5.0200 of the Sussex Municipal Code. The BOFC’s powers are derived from the Village Board, but it is responsible to independently exercise objective independent judgement on the matters before it. The BOFC’s actions are both legislative and judicial procedures.
