The wastewater facility, which is managed by the Village of Sussex, serves the Village of Sussex, Village of Lannon, Lisbon Sanitary District #1, Richmond School, and a portion of the Village of Menomonee Falls.
The wastewater facility has a capacity of 5.1 million gallons per day. The wastewater is conveyed to the facility by gravity and lift stations. The regional facility collection area contains 10 lift stations as part of its infrastructure: three are in Sussex, four are in the Town of Lisbon; two are in the Village of Lannon; and one is in the Village of Menomonee Falls. Trucked-in holding tank and septic waste is also hauled to the two receiving stations.
Here is a summary of steps in the treatment process:
- A fine screen (1/4” bar screen) removes rags, paper products sticks and other course material from the wastewater.
- The wastewater then flows to the wet well, being pumped to one, two, or all three grit collectors, depending on hydraulic volume, which centrifugally remove inert solids, such as coffee grounds, sand, rocks and grit.
- From the grit collectors, the wastewater travels to the oxidation ditch, where the biological process begins to break down the waste. Eight computer-controlled disk aerators maintain the desired dissolved oxygen level and keeps the mixed liquid in suspension.
- Aerators are rotated automatically to prevent freezing and to maintain equal wear on the equipment.
- Aluminum chloride is added to treatment process for phosphorous removal in the last channel of the oxidation ditch before wastewater is sent to the clarifiers.
- The effluent leaves the weirs of the clarifiers, where it is pumped to the tertiary treatment process.
- The effluent is then filtered through four anthracite bedded filters and continues to flow to the ultraviolet disinfection channel and is discharged to Sussex Creek.
