For those living on Good Hope Road, Main Street, and Maple Avenue, please note that the centerline is the cutoff so your collection day will be different from your neighbors across the street. For example, if you live on Good Hope Road on the north side of the road your collection day will be Monday, but if you live on the south side of the road your collection day will be on Tuesday.
Trash and recycling carts should not be placed out at the curb more than 24 hours before the pickup day. Learn more about Health and Sanitation services.
The Sussex Yard Waste Collection Site is located at the N72W22924 Good Hope Road

Opens for season: First Saturday in April
Closes for season: Saturday before Thanksgiving at 4 p.m.
The erection of mailboxes shall conform to the following specifications:
- Mailbox box face should be no more than 12 inches from the front of curb and the bottom of the box at least 41 to 45 inches from the top height of the curb.
- The post should be set in a hole 8-10 inches in diameter and 24 inches deep.
- If possible, place the mailbox on the side of your driveway where the traffic pattern allows the plow to pass the driveway and then pass the mailbox. This allows as much of the heavy snow to fall off the plow prior to the mailbox.
- Keep post at least 5 feet away from fire hydrants.
To assist the Public Works Department and the Postal Service, the Village suggests inspecting your mailbox and post prior to winter and repairing as necessary. The following tips can help reduce the chance of damage due to plowing operation:
- Ensure the mailbox post is sturdy and fully supported to the ground to withstand the heavy snow moved aside by the plow.
- Add small section of reflective tape to the right side (facing traffic) to make it easier to see during storms.
- Remove snow from around the base and to the right side of the mailbox regularly (but avoid pushing snow into road).
- If you have a highly ornate/artistic mailbox, consider replacing with a standard box during winter. The metal on many of these mailboxes, while very attractive, is quite brittle in winter conditions and doesn’t withstand plowing impacts well.
Village Plow Drivers try hard to avoid damaging mailboxes and yards as they plow and are very aware of the frustration and cost that come from dealing with those situations. Most damage is caused by snow coming off the plow blade and is an unfortunate reality of winter. The Village has an adopted policy that the Village will replace a mailbox up to $75 in value if it is physically struck by the plow, but will not replace for damage caused by snow coming off of the plow blade. The Village also comes out in spring and repairs yard damage. If your mailbox or yard is damaged this winter, please call the Civic Center at 246-5200.
Every owner of a dog more than five months of age is required to pay a dog license fee before April 1. The Village Clerk will issue a license upon providing evidence that a dog is immunized against rabies.
It is against Village ordinance to allow a dog or cat to run at large anywhere within the Village unless controlled by the owner. Animals are not allowed in parks or parkways unless on a leash of suitable strength not more than 6 feet in length. No animal shall be tied up and left unattended.
Vicious dogs and cats that have bitten, attacked or injured any person are not allowed within the Village. Residents may not keep more than two (2) dogs or three (3) cats over the age of 5 months, except in a shelter or kennel duly authorized by the Village.
Animal excrement must be disposed of immediately after an animal has relieved itself.
Owners are required to remove rubbish, dirt, snow or ice that has formed or been deposited on the sidewalks within a 24-hour period. If you notice a sidewalk that has not been cleared of ice or snow, please call the Civic Center at (262) 246-5200.
