Building permits are required to construct any new building, add to an existing building, for exterior alterations, and interior alterations.  You may also need to obtain separate electrical, plumbing, and HVAC permits for your building project.  Below is a list of common project that DO require a permit.  Keep in mind that this list is not exhaustive.  If you are unsure whether you need a permit for your project, call the Building Department at 262-246-5212.

  • Roofing/Siding/Trim
  • Window/Door Replacement
  • Sheds & Garages
  • Decks, Fences, Swimming Pools, Hot Tubs
  • Basement Finish, Kitchen and Bath Alterations
  • Additions and Exterior Alterations
  • Furnace & A/C Replacements, Dishwaters, Water Heaters
  • Driveways and Parking Bays/Pads

While it is common for contractors to obtain permits, it is the responsibility of the homeowner to make sure the required permits are obtained.  Starting a project before the required permits are issued can result in double fees and/or fines. Also, some subdivisions have their own requirements, so check with your "Homeowners Association" to determine if your project is allowed.

Permit applications are available on our Permits and Forms page.  Permits applications can be submitted in person at the Civic Center, via mail, using the drop box inside in the front doors of the Civic Center, or you may email.
