The mission of the Village of Sussex Fire Department is to proactively, safely, and aggressively protect life, property, and the environment.

The Sussex Fire Department has identified six strategic goals for the organization:

Operational Effectiveness – The ability to deploy trained personnel and resources, consistently and at safe staffing levels, to mitigate emergent and non-emergent incidents.

Employee Professional Development – Create and maintain a work environment of continuous professional improvement to provide the highest level of service through well-trained employees. Develop internal leadership opportunities and career development pathways within the organization.

Employee Health and Safety – Provide a safe and healthy work environment that will attract long-term employees while reducing the risk of occupational disease and injuries through evidence-based preventative measures.

Administrative Oversight and Fiscal Sustainability – Examine opportunities internally and externally to improve efficiencies while exploring opportunities to utilize taxpayer money in the most fiscally responsible manner.

Community Risk Reduction and Prevention – Promote and participate in programs designed to reduce risk and stimulate a culture of prevention within the Village of Sussex.

Resource and Asset Management – Maintain equipment, apparatus, facilities, and technology in a financially responsible approach in order to meet the mission of the Sussex Fire Department.

EMS services - The Village of Sussex Fire Department currently has two (2) ambulances in it's fleet. Sussex Fire Department ambulances are staffed to the Advanced Cardiac Life Support level with staffing of at least one Paramedic on the ambulance. Each ambulance carries an EKG monitor/defibrillator with the capability to transmit the patient's EKG to the receiving hospital from the field. This drastically reduces the amount of time from the onset of the cardiac event to the invasive cardiac interventions needed to prevent further cardiac damage.
We responded to 621 calls in 2020 for Rescue and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Incidents with EMS Calls accounting for 74% of the total call volume for the Sussex Fire Department.
